Airbnb本社訪問：Visit Airbnb HQ

Staffs are super-friendly here.  It's a kind of people who love meeting up with new people.
社員はとてもフレンドリー。新しい出会いが大好きな人たちが集まっている

Here're some clips from my visit to Airbnb HQ in SoMA today.  I've been working with them since the end of last year as a part-time translator and it was nice seeing them in person.

The guy in the middle is Jason Katz-Brown, a software engineer in charge of international operation.  He worked for Google Japan before moving here, so his Japanese is really fluent.  On top of that, he plays ping pong!  He said he learned it at Doshisha University where his mother was working.

OK, the guy on the right is my contact person, Julian Leung, Translator Manager Asia.   Amazingly he also turned out to be a... ping pong player!  He said he was in high school team.  Wow, hardcore stuff! Thank you everyone for coming out, hahaha.

I was all excited about finding other ping pong players and it was only afterwards that I realized Jason is that famous US #1 rank Scrabble player (;ﾟ∀ﾟ)

Zinga HQ is around the corner.

半年前から翻訳のお仕事をいただいているAirbnb本社に今日初めてお邪魔した。

場所はサンフランシスコSoMA。
ジンガ本社から数ブロックのところにある。

入り口には看板とか何もないので「あれ？移転したんだっけ？」と思って電話したら、「それでいいんです、今出ます～」と言って陽気なワカモノふたりが出てきてくれた。

ひとりはいつもお世話になっているアジア翻訳総括ジュリアン君で、もうひとりは国際部門担当してるエンジニアのジェイソン君（元グーグルジャパンで日本語ペラペラ）。

さて、中に入ると、なぜか右はジョーボーン本社だ。なんでもビル自体はジョーボーンで、Airbnbはそこに間借りしてるらしい。Airbnbも所帯がだいぶ大きくなってきたから今新拠点に移転準備中だと、ジュリアン君。

Airbnb is renting Jawbone's office space. 
Unlike Airbnb, Jawbone is extremely quiet. Maybe everyone is wearing Jawbone headset?
ジョーボーン本社って椅子1個なのか！！！
…って思ったら左におっきなオフィススペースがあったｗ
水を打ったような静けさなんで言われるまで気づかなかったよ…

1F. Seems like a real-time live stats feeds on screen.
こちら1階。画面に流れてるのは統計のライブフィードかな？

2階に上がってすぐ現れたのが、この無駄に大きいふたつの箱だ。「そうだ、これ紹介しなきゃ、これ！」と、急にテンション上がるジュリアン君。この箱がなんだというのだ？

「創業当時お金がない時に創業者ふたりがデザインしたのがこれなんです。ふたりともデザイナーなんで、これデザインして1個40ドルで売って会社の資金集めたんすよ。今もこうして会社に置いて、『Thinking out of the box（箱の外で考えろ=常識の枠に囚われるな、の英語表現）』という哲学の証にしてるんです！」

な～るほどね～。この肩まである箱がねぇ…

During Obama-McCain campaign, Airbnb co-founders designed this and sold one for $40 to get out of debts.
It's the symbol of Airbnb's philosophy 'thinking out of the box.'  Nice.
あとで調べてみたら、このアフォっぽいオバマの箱が飛ぶように売れたお陰で、
ふたりは借金全額返済できたようだ。世の中なにが売れるかわからない！

小人が出てきそうなツリーハウス、実は会議室。ちょうど採用面接中だった

Airbnb currently has around 200 staffs in the U.S. and 70 overseas.
As it grows, it's moving to a new campus.

Office has this homey atomosphere throughout.
オフィスは「家にいるような雰囲気」を大事にしている

MBA and ergonomics keyboard are the norm. 
I mean, I didn't see anything else but Mac and Macbook Air.

A reminder of where it all started; a replica of  co-founder's former apartment.
Only designer turned into entrepreneur will do this. Nice.

God, I never made peace sign in my life. What am I doing lol.
柄にもなくピースなんぞしてしまった。何をやっておるのじゃ…

いや～実は密かに卓球台を楽しみにしていたのだが、それは社員増えまくって撤去されてた…無念なり。行く前にジュリアン君に聞いてたんだけどね。

でも未練がましく悔しがってたら、なんとジェイソン君、昔お母様が教鞭執っていた関係で同志社で卓球やってたことが大判明！　すると横からジュリアン君（モントリオール出身）も「あー僕も香港の高校で卓球やってました」と言うではないの！　おーおーおーみんなよくぞカミングアウトしてくれましたね。

…と、卓球の話で舞い上がって気づかなかったけど、帰ってから「ジェイソン君の上の名前なんだっけ？」って確かめてみたら、なんとあの有名な元全米スクラブル・チャンピオンのジェイソン・カッツ-ブラウン君だった(;ﾟ∀ﾟ)
