12 Things You May Not Know About Pixar
ピクサーで知っておきたい12のこと

1.　Everyone in perma-smile
みんなスマイルモード

They are very nice and friendly to each other. It's an utopia of harmony and respect.
社員はとにかくフレンドリーで、擦れ違いざま本当に嬉しそうに声を掛け合う。好きな仕事してます、リスペクトしてます、という空気。

Don't try smile-shutter mode here, or else, you'll spend up your memory. それはもうスマイルシャッターモードが連写になっちゃうぐらいのスマイル遭遇率なのだ。

2.　Couches and artworks everywhere
至るところカウチとアート

You find a living set in every corner where people come and sit, talk to share ideas. Each cubicle has a sofa for three. Kitchen is as big as the one for home. None of the sofa or kitchen or cubicle repeats the same pattern; design is varied and unique. As Ain't It Cool News noted, “Jobs originally proposed a building with one bathroom, something that would drive foot traffic to a central area all day long." The areas for refreshment seem to be serving that purpose.

スマイルに負けないのがカウチ遭遇率。建物のあちこちに自宅のような寛ぎの空間がたっぷり採ってある。キュービクル（アート部門は各戸完全カスタマイズのコテージ長屋）にも1部屋ごとに3人掛けソファがあり、各フロアのキッチンは家庭用並みの大きさ。ソファもキッチンもキューブもひとつとして同じデザインはない。ここで触れたようにジョブズは最初「ビル1個にトイレ1つ」を提案した。社員同士の触れ合い、発想のシャッフルを大事にする基本が、休憩のアメニティにも現れている。

	This one has a little counter for refreshments. ここは飲み物とおつまみ常備のカウンターもある。
	It makes you think when was the last time you visited art museum. そういえば最後に美術館行ったのっていつだっけ…と最後に考えたのはいつだっけ…

3. A studio is divided into left and right brains
スタジオは右脳と左脳に分かれている

	Right wing houses the Art Dept. where they design the look of the film. 入って右手は芸術的創造性を司るアート部門。映画の人物・設定などデザインする。
	Left wing houses Render Farm and other technical depts. Beyond the main building, there's another building hosting Tools Dept. responsible for developing Pixar's in-house proprietary film-making software. 左は言語・論理的思考を司るレンダーファーム、テクニカル、脚本、管理の各部門。プールを挟んだ離れのツール部門ではピクサー独自の映画製作用ソフトを作っている。

4.　They already watched Ghibli's latest movie "Ponyo"
　 「崖の上のポニョはもう観ました」

Just like Ghibli previewing Pixar's new release, they have screening passes to see all movies including Ghibli's before they hit the movie theater in US. Asked about Ponyo, Masa wasn't quite sure what to say about Ghibli's latest hand-drawn 2D animation.

ジブリ同様、ピクサーも公開前の新作映画は社内でプレビューする。「ポニョは先日（8月上旬）観たよ」というmasaさんに感想を尋ねたら「うーん…」。ピクサーに代表されるCGの向こう張った2Dアニメだからなあ…。

5. The ceiling of the main theater shows constellation
劇場は天井に星座を映し出す

At the big theater (its sound and projection system is even better than what Sky Walker Ranch has), you can view the constellation projected on the entire ceiling. "It's the sky looked up from this campus," Masa told us.
大小2つの社内劇場はスカイウォーカー・ランチをも凌ぐ最新設備を誇る。大劇場では照明が落ちると天井いっぱいに星座が出て流れ星が落ちる。「本社から見上げた空の模様をそのまま再現しているんです」（Masaさん）。

The bigger theater with 230 seats is located at end of the lobby. Depending on the materials, its security check can be very tight.　ロビー突き当たりが全席230の大劇場。素材によっては（製作中の映画など）手荷物検査が厳重になる。

6. They hired a chef from Google.
現シェフはグーグルから雇った。

	At Luxo Cafe, there is an access to all sorts of cuisine types.　アトリウムにある『ルクソー・カフェ』。メニューは多彩。
	The world famous cereal bar across the cafeteria. カフェ向かいのシリアルバー。ありとあらゆるシリアル、牛乳、エスプレッソ、カプチーノ、ピーナッツバター＆サンドイッチが24時間食べ放題。

7. Interns wear boy scout uniform.
インターンはボーイスカウトの制服着用義務あり

There's no dress code except for interns. One more step to a dream job! ドレスコードはないが、インターンは別。「ひと目で見習いと分かる」こんなカワユイ格好で働かされる。夢の社員まであと一歩、がんばれ！

8. Render Farm has Tavern-like neon sign and a little shot glass collection
レンダーファームには居酒屋風ネオンの看板とショットグラス

Nobody seems to care about it, but I was amused to find inside the Render Farm (photo) dozens of shot glasses lined-up. Probably it's part of the setup with the Tavern-like neon sign. As some guessed here, I also saw a huge DELL box.　 “レンダーファーム”（写真）は、CGIのレンダリングを行うサーバー保管庫のこと。単なるサーバーの行列、ケーブルの束も、全ピクサー映画がここを通過していくと思うと感無量だ。窓の内側にショットグラスが2ダースほど並んでるのが看板と連動していて舞台設定のようだ。酔っ払いファームかい？　ここで誰かが名前出してるけど、デルの巨大なダンボールも転がっていた。


9. They use Macs and Others
ピクサー社員はマックもマック以外も使う

The company provides Mac and non-Mac. I saw boxes from all different brands there. 会社からの配給もマック＆非マック混ぜ混ぜ。

	Masa uses HP machine and three other desktops. MasaさんのメインはHPで、ほかにデスクトップが3台ある
	A kind of ergonomic keyboard I only see translating Gizmodo. Kinesis? キネシス？ギズの担当記事で見るぐらいしか縁のないエルゴノミクス系キーボード

10. They do exercise. 彼らは運動もする

I saw two swimmers, two guys running on treadmills, two kids on scooters, two guys wandering around the anphitheater, and Masa had swum in the morning. Other amenities include basketball court, football field, gym & fitness, etc. 泳いでるひと2人、マシンで走ってるひと2人、スクーター乗った子ども2人、庭を果てしなく歩く2人組に遭遇した。バスケのコートとサッカー場もある。Masaさんは「午前のうちにひと泳ぎしました」。

11. They pitch story ideas.　
ストーリーのアイディアはシリコンバレーのCEOのごとく“ピッチ”する

Just like Silicon Valley startup CEOs, Pixar artists pitch their own story ideas using this sort of storyboards. There was a section dedicated for stories that never made the cut in Nemo movie, too. スタートアップがVCに起業のアイディアを売り込んで投資を確保するように、ピクサーのアーティストも自分なりに「こうしたら面白い」という話の展開をストーリーボードに描いてピッチする（売り込む）。

	Once the main idea is selected, they write the short summary. Here, we see 6 different drafts made for "Finding Nemo." First Treatment dated on Sept. 8, 1999. ニモの脚本は1999年9月8日から計6回草案を練り直した。

12. They offer enrichment classes through Pixar University
社内には生涯学習「ピクサー大学（PU）」がある

The courses are offered during lunch or after work. Classes include sculpturing, screen writing, improvisational acting, gesture/figure drawing, acting, yoga, pilates, martial arts, etc.　コースは彫刻、脚本、アドリブ演技、ジェスチャー＆人物の素描、ヨガ、演劇、ピラーテ、武道など。クラスは昼休みか終業後に採れる。

As I wrote, Masa took a Pixar tour guide class prior to our visit.
