Mike's "The Man In The Arena" was a great read on a day the Nobel Peace Prize was given to the man who has gone through the defeat of 2000 presidential election. Above, Gore is holding his news conference at the Alliance for Climate Protection in Palo Alto he founded last year, which became $750K richer with his winnings!

Theodore Roosevelt, by the way, was the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1906 for negotiating the peace pact bet'n Russia and Japan (Treaty of Portsmouth, 1905). TR accepted that role because he was so inspired by Inazo Nitobe's 'Bushido : The Soul of Japan' (full text). -You may see some influence here.

静まり返る会場でヨシが一語、一語かみ含めるように引用した先人セオドル・ルーズベルト（TR）第26代大統領の名言「The Man in the Arena（アリーナの男）」は、1910年4月23日、仏ソルボンヌ大学構内で行った演説の中でも有名な一節である。敗者を語る言葉としてこれほど力強い言葉はない。
ちょうど今日はアル・ゴア氏ノーベル平和賞受賞のニュースで沸いた。写真上は、氏が昨年創設し会長を務めるパロアルトの非営利団体「Alliance for Climate Protection」で開かれた記者会見の模様だ。賞金75万ドル（共同受賞のUNと半分こ）はこのNPOに寄贈される。
は水曜、氏のドキュメンタリー映画「Inconvenient Truth（不都合な真実）」に9つの科学的誤認があるとして、学校で見せる際には反証も資料として配るよう判決を下した。「政治の道具」とする司法判断はちょっと悲しいかな。政治と思われるのが嫌で映画化の話を断っていたぐらいなのにね。2000年大統領選敗北後のゴア氏の生き方は、多くの人を励ます。
ところでノーベルと言えばアメリカ人初のノーベル賞受賞者はTRだ。1905年日露講和条約調停の功績で、1906年のノーベル平和賞をとった。「なんでルーズベルトが？」と思いきや、新渡戸稲造著『武士道』に 深い感銘を受け調停を引き受けたんだそうな。そういえば「アリーナの男」にも武士道の影響が読み取れるような気が…しない？
それがヨシのモシャモシャ頭、マイクのマクブクプロを通過して今に蘇る不思議を、思う。
