Bugatti is a legendary car manufacturer founded by Ettore Bugatti of Italian origin in 1904. Its trademark was acquired by Volkswagen in 1998. The company is well known with its success in early Grand Prix motor racing (2,000 winnings during 1909-1940), winning the first ever Monaco Grand Prix.
This new super sports, Bugatti Veyron 16.4, is the most pricey model ($1.3m), offering 1001 HP with a top speed of 253 mph (405km/h), faster than any car on earth. Only 300 Bugatti Veyrons will ever be produced.
It came in a car dealer in Los Gatos last month, and Mercury reporter Matt Neuman made an exclusive coverage on it.
Holding the keys was Butch Leitzinger, a 37-year-old race-car driver who has won the 24-hour race at Daytona three times. Here, he said, his role is car protector. He drives the car for potential buyers, and then switches to the passenger seat to assure that nothing untoward happens to it. And this is a car that needs protecting. It's unbelievably rare, and much regarded. So far, 30 orders have been placed for it in the United States, and nine have been delivered here. "I don't want to give them the key and tell them to come back in 20 minutes," Leitzinger said. "With 1,001 horsepower, they could be very far away.""And, my favorite fun fact: A Veyron at top speed will run out of fuel in 12 minutes," he wrote. 2006年5月18日、ロスガトスの高級カーディーラーに名車Bugatti Veyron到来。価格130万ドル(1億4,875万円)、世界で最も高いスポーツカーだ。
1001馬力、最高時速407.5km(253mph)。地上のどの車よりも速いんだが、これをやると12分でガス欠になってしまう(ココのコメントでも触れたが)。
生産限定300台で約120台が米国向け。米国からの発注はまだ50台で、うち9台がバレーに到着し、既に3台売れたという。一人は大手テクノロジー関連を持つ富豪、2人目はご隠居中の御仁、3人目の身元は不明だ。う～ん、誰だろう???
サンノゼ・マーキュリー6月15日の朝刊に出た試乗特集(カー専門サイトの全文転載)が上の写真だ。記事によると、試乗にはデイトナ24時間レースで3回優勝歴のある37歳のカーレーサー、ブッチ・ライジンガーがピッタリ同伴するらしい。彼の役割は「car protector (車を守る人)」、つまり試乗者が悪さをしないか見張ること。まずは自分が華麗なハンドルさばきで運転してみせてから、助手席に移る(降りない)。

イタリア生まれの名匠エットーレ・ブガッティが倅のジャンと親子２人で築き上げた世界的ブランド。アルザック地方(独領>仏領)で1909年から1940年にかけ8,000台近くを生産し、'20年代にレース2,000勝、第1回からモナコ・グランプリ3年連続制覇、ル・マン24時間レースではジャン・ピエール・ウィミーユを起用し'37年と'39年に優勝した。
ジャンは'39年ル・マンで王冠をとったType 57 S Tankを試運転中、自転車を避けようとして事故死(享年30)。'45年工場は戦災を受け、'47年エットーレ逝去。伝説は途絶える。
復活の試みは'50年代ジアンキーノ・コロンボが、'60年代バージル・エクスナーが行ったが成果は得られず、航空部品部門だけ残ったブガッティは人手を渡り、'87年イタリアの実業家ロマーノ・アルティオールが買い取る。
工場を名車の産地モデーナ(伊)に開いて造ったのがBugatti EB110で、設計はランボルギーニ・ミウラの著名デザイナー、パオロ・スタンザーニとマルチェッロ・ガンディーニが手掛けた。このEB110はF1レース７勝のマイケル・シュマッカー(フェラーリ)がベネトン当時に買い、未だに愛用していることで有名。
'95年にこの会社も倒産し、'98年フォルクスワーゲンが商標権取得、2000年Bugatti Automobiles SASを創設し、ようやく復活したのがこのBugatti Veyron 16.4というわけだ。
ラルフ・ローレンが所有するType 57 Atlanticは、これまで世に出た車の中でも最高傑作の一つに数えられる。
