So, I'm back from trip to Japan, the land of excruciating heat and suffocating humidity.
Oh boy, I can barely imagine, six years from now today, all the world's top athletes come together to celebrate the Tokyo Olympic opening ceremony. Tokyo games are scheduled from July 24 to August 9 when the temperature hits the highest in Japan. Are they kidding?
Why? IOC picked between July 15 and August 31 period because European and American TV stations (namely NBC) are more likely to buy the broadcasting license to fill in the off-season of the major professional sports leagues.
But wait. When Qatar bid for the 2020 Game, the IOC admitted it to hold the games in September and October in order to avoid its summer heat (It reaches over 50C, 122F! DOA!!). Why not Tokyo Fall Olympic? Just like the last time (1964 Game was held from Oct 10th, Japan's Sports Day)?
Well, as we all know by now, Qatar lost the bid...
I just hope they hold the marathon race in Hokkaido.
久々の日本は、やっぱり暑かった。
6年後の今日は東京五輪開会日。会期は2020年7月24日から8月9日―よりによって猛暑のピークではないか。誰がこんな日程決めたんだ!!!?
…と思ったらIOCだった。入札前から7月15日～8月31日でフィックスらしい。理由は、欧米のプロスポーツリーグがオフシーズンの夏場がTV放映権はよく売れるから。ポテチ食べながらTV観る視聴者の娯楽のために世界のトップアスリート殺す気かいな。
因みに、前回1964年東京五輪では10月に会期をずらしての開催だった。…だよね、日本ではスポーツの秋、運動会は秋って決まってんだから。例外的に認めてもらえないんかなあ。
…と思ったら2020年招致に名乗りを上げたカタールは夏は気温が50度超えるので9、10月の開催でIOCにオッケーもらってたみたいね。ま、1次選考で落ちたけど…それがネックだったんだろうか…。
競技も命がけだけど、観る方も命がけだわね。
せめてマラソンは北海道にしてやって欲しい。
