Volozh announced that Ilya Segalovich who has been diagnosed with stomach cancer since last year, was disconnected from life support on Saturday. ロシアのIT界の重鎮、ヤンデックス共同創業者兼CTOのイリア・セガロビッチ氏が死亡した。享年48。
共同創業者兼CEOアルカディ・ヴォロズ氏が会社のブログで発表したところによると、氏は昨年胃がんにかかって治療に励んでいたが、先週新たに脳腫瘍が見つかり、その後、髄膜に転移。「悪性髄膜炎で容態は回復不能となった――脳がものの1日も経たぬうちにバーンアウトしてしまったのだ」。意識不明となった翌日の27日、医師団は生命維持装置を外した。
セガロビッチ氏はモスクワの東400kmのニジニ・ノヴゴロド（Nizhny Novgorod）に地質学者の息子として生まれ、カザフスタンの学校に通って育った。ヴォロズ氏と知り合ったのはカザフスタンのアルマティにある物理数学高校（Republican Physics and Mathematics School）在学中だ。
その後はモスクワの地質探検や鉱物資源研究所勤務を経て1993年、ヴォロズ氏とふたりでヤンデックスのアイディアを着想し、1997年、検索エンジン会社として創業。現在ではロシア国内検索市場で62%のシェアを誇る（グーグルは25.6%）。
「Yet Another Index」略して「Yandex」という名前はセガロビッチ氏が考えたもの。
