One thing that bothered me living in America was that people don't run in whatever situation.
In Hollywoood movies, even when a huge asteroid is about to hit and destroy all humans, Mr. President just walk. In America, they teach students "leaders don't run, they walk."
On crosswalk, pedestrians never ever run. I was a bit upset first because, in Japan, you're good if you rush, making drivers wait less and happy. So whenever I see them walk like a king, I was like, "Whaaaat!? Why are you slowing down there, right in front of my car!!!%?!???"
But one day my daughter told me that they teach at school not to run but to walk for safety reasons. So, it's not like they don't care about drivers or they feel they're more important than others. They just need to show they're there. After all, it's a 'crossWALK.'

横断歩道で走るのは日本人ぐらいだ。小走りどころか歩調ゆるめて世界中の運転手ににこやかに手を振っていったりする。おまえは王様か！
映画でも大統領は悠長に歩く。空から槍が降ってこようと地球滅亡の危機が迫ろうと、走らない。
最初これが本当に不思議でしょうがなかったのだけど、ある日娘に「学校で横断歩道は走っちゃダメって習ったよ、走ると運転手に見えなくて危ないから」と聞いて、やっとアメリカ人は「走らない」んじゃなく「走ってはいけない」と思ってんだってことに気づいた。考えてみたら「歩道」ってぐらいだもんね。
同様にアメリカでは、「リーダーたるもの決して人前で走ってはならない」。ここに大柴ひさみ氏が書いておられるようなことを学校で習うのだ。昔習った話を神父のデイビッド・フォスター氏がブログに書いてるので訳しておくね。
院にいた頃、紛争・紛争解決の博士課程のセミナーをとった。どう合意点を見出し平和的解決に向け交渉するか沢山教わったわけだが、中でも頭から消えて離れない教授の言葉がこれ。「人前では決して走るな。急いでる自分の姿を晒してはいけない」
古い諺の「汗を見せるな（Never let them see you sweat）」ならともかく、「走ったり急いでる姿を見せるな」なんて聞いたことないな…と思ってると、教授はこう言葉を継いだ。リーダーたるもの一歩一歩着実に丁寧にペースを崩さずゴールに向かって歩いていくものだ。そのリーダーがパニックモードでは自分のチームと意思疎通がとれないし、状況も把握できない。自らの感情や動揺に囚われるようではリーダー失格だ。
リーダー最大の試練は己の情熱を律し、情熱を怒りや執念と勘違いされぬよう努めることにある。けっきょく人にどう思われるか、なのだ。自分で自分の振る舞いは常にコントロールできる人だと思わせないといけない。

うちの中学（日本）の先生も常々「紳士淑女は走らない。どうしても走らなくてはならないときがあったら侍のように走れ」と言っておりました。

ReplyDeleteI'm British and we are not specifically taught not to run. In the example of the pedestrian crossing we don't run because, legally, pedestrians have the right of way and running implies, wrongly, that drivers shouldn't stop and wait. There is a power differential between cars and pedestrians because you can kill a pedestrian with a car but the pedestrian cannot kill you. So the law tries to redress this balance by giving the right of way to pedestrians. Unfortunately, impatient drivers do not always appreciate this and menace pedestrians because they are impatient to shave a few seconds off their journey.

ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not (now I remember), as in UK, pedestrians' rights are protected by law in Japan. If you see someone standing on the sidewalk and don't stop, you fail driving test. When pedestrians step into the crosswalk, they own the crosswalk (and they run anyway).

Yeah, you're right. For all those reputation for its longevity, it's funny that we still try to shove a few seconds...for what? It's like Mark Zuckerberg leaving no tip after Rome lunch...
