"I have closely followed the debate over our debt ceiling and have been deeply disappointed at what’s going on in Washington. After weeks of failed debate in Washington, I was pleased to see a solution to this crisis emerge. I strongly believe that crossing the aisle for the good of the American people is more important than party politics. I had to be here for this vote. I could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy.

What a spirit... Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to the floor of the House of Representatives today to cast her first vote since she was shot in the head in the Jan. 8 shooting rampage in Tucson, Arizona. The entire chamber rose to its feet in the bipartisan standing ovation (Video). She was leaning on an aide as she exited the House accompanied by her husband and astronaut Mark Kelly.
1月のアリゾナ乱射で頭部を撃たれたガブリエル・ギフォーズ議員が本日夕、債務上限引き上げ法案に賛成票を投じるため、事件後初めて下院議場にサプライズで姿を現し、満場のスタンディングオベーションで迎えられた（動画）。
泥かけ試合も恩讐の彼方。法案は賛成多数で可決し、なんとかデフォルトは回避できそうな見通しだ。
ギフォーズ議員は票を投じると周囲の人とハグをし、ニコニコ誇らしげな宇宙飛行士の夫マーク・ケリーさんに付き添われて会場を去った。あんな意識不明の重体からここまで回復するなんて、なんというスピリット。その1票のなんと重いことか。
