Just watched the Oscar-winning German movie "The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen)" last week. From its jacket, I expected nothing more than "Big Brother is Watching You" world of John Grisham's The Firm, but it was far from it; the film is about a transformation of Big Brother eyes themselves.
I liked the part when the Stasi agent, Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe), reads Brecht's "Memory of Marie A (Erinnerung an die Marie A.)" on his couch, having stolen it from Dreyman's apartment. Mühe himself had been under surveillance by his second wife, Jenny Gröllmann, who informed on him to Stasi and the file disclosed to him amounted to hundreds of pages. Gröllmann died in August 2006, and Mühe in July 22, 2007.
"The Lives of Others" is the prime example of what Pricles said thousands of years ago.;

ドイツ映画『The Lives of Others（原題：Das Leben der Anderen／邦題：善き人のためのソナタ）』で印象深かったのは、ウルリッヒ・ミューエ演じるシュタージ（秘密警察）の大尉がカウチに寝っ転がって、劇作家の家からくすねてきたブレヒトの詩集を広げ、『マリー・Aの思い出（Memory of Marie A）』を読む顔。
ジャケから連想したのはジョン・グリシャム著『ザ・ファーム』の監視世界だったけど、この映画はそれ以上だ。なんの前知識もなく観ると流れが分かってから聴くソナタより、流れが動くブレヒトのシーンの方が、忘れられない。
俳優ウルリッヒ・ミューエは高校を出て建設作業員の訓練後、東ドイツ人民軍に入り、ベルリンの壁の監視兵を務めた人。「逃げる奴は撃ち殺さないと俳優にはなれんぞ」と命じられ、「殺したら俳優なんかなれない」と胃に穴が開くほど葛藤し、しまいには本当に胃潰瘍にかかって除隊（幸い殺さずに済んだ）、演劇俳優になった。
シュタージ役どころか彼自身、2番目の妻の女優ジェニー・グロールマン（Jenny Gröllmann）=写真は結婚当時=によって当局に密通された苦い経験を持つ。離婚後、開示されたシュタージへの報告書は500ページにも及んだという。映画発表時その事実を著書で明るみにし、前妻グロールマンに提訴され、文書が本物かどうかで熾烈な争いとなったが、グロールマンは2006年8月がんで他界してしまった。
英・独タイトルの直訳は「他人の人生」である。これはトゥキディデス『戦史』第二43章3項に記されたペリクレスの言葉を短くした以下の名言を連想させる（摂訳）。
汝がこの世に残すもの。それは石の碑に刻んだものではない。他人の人生に織り込んだものだ。 - ペリクレス
この映画のオスカー外国語映画賞受賞式典でロスを訪れた2007年2月、ミューエは既に病状がかなり進行しており数時間でとんぼ帰りして胃の緊急手術を受けた。そして同じ年の7月21日ドイツ紙に胃がんで休業を宣言し、その翌日突然にこの世を去った（Wikipediaより）。-R.I.P.
