Netflix sent me the 2002 film 'Orange County' last week. I didn't quite remember adding to my rental que... but anyway I watched it.It's about a surfer boy from Orange County who stumbled upon a life-changing book authored by a Stanford lecturer and dreamed about studying with him to become a writer. He got rejected because his SAT scores were switched with those of the worst student in his school. Being unable to give up, he drove up to Stanford to convince admission officer. In the end, he finds value in the life of not-that-perfect but still caring folks, and the movie ends with these two words; "Stanford **cks!"
Next morning, I saw news headlines telling quite contrary story about an 18-yr-old Orange County native and Troy High graduate Kim Azia (photo on campus, high school prom) who spent 8 months on campus pretending to be a Stanford student, taking Santa Clara University ROTC programs showing fraud transcripts.
According to The Stanford Daily that broke the news, the possible penalty charge is $175 per day. My friend says, the funny part is that $42,000 for eight months costs less than the regular Stanford board and tuition. The university and ROTC are unlikely to seek criminal charges against Kim, though...
Another impostor, Elizabeth Okazaki, was found frequenting the Varian Physics Laboratory for years. Well, it's a wake-up call for overbearing Asian parents.
In Kim's Facebook profile (deleted by now), she wrote her favorite movies are Catch Me If You Can, Mission Impossible, etc... and her favorite quotes; "You are what you pretend to be" - Kurt Vonnegut.
全米の親、大学、高校は月末からこの話題一色。
全米屈指の名門トロイ高を昨年6月に卒業し9月18日からスタンフォード大構内の学寮に8ヶ月間住んで普通の学生に混じって授業に出て教科書を買いテスト勉強していた“偽スタンフォード大生”、エイジア・キムさん（写真1、写真2＝高校のプロム） のニュースだ。
動機は不明。元同級生の間では「名門一直線の親の手前、まさか落ちたとも言えなかったんじゃ？」と同情の声も多い。
同じ高校の子が「あれ？」と最初1ヶ月で気づいたがズルズルいって学内新聞「The Stanford Weekly」 に先月載って全米のマスコミの見出しを飾ってしまった。今も学内新聞（上）はノーベル賞受賞者のアンドリュー・ファイアー教授とロジャー・コーンバーグ教授の話、米陸軍高性能コンピューティング研究センター（AHPCRC）への軍からの助成金$105M反対運動を押さえてキムさんの続報が一面トップ。記事下のコメントは読めたものではない。
寮の友だちには「手続きの不備で自室の割り当てがない」と相談し泊めてもらった。4月18日からはアジア系のOKADA寮に移り、日本に1学期短期留学する人のルームメートAさんに話をつけ窓から部屋に出入り。Aさんは彼のところに外泊が多く挙動不審には気づかなかった。寮からきた警告のメールにも「もうここにはいません」とAさんになりすまして嘘の返事を書いたりしていた。
学外の人間が無断で学寮に泊まった場合、大学当局が課す罰金は1日175ドル、8ヶ月で42000ドル。「単位はもらえないけどスタンフォードの授業料 ＋寮費より安いのがまた笑える」と友人氏。けど、大学も刑事責任を追及する気はないようだ。
キムさんはスタンフォードの成績表を偽造し、近くのサンタクララ大学にある予備役将校訓練課程（ROTC = Reserve Officer Training Corps）にも2学期だけ参加していたが、真面目で教官も全く疑わなかった。こっちも正式契約で履歴調査が入る前にやめたので処罰の対象にはならない。
スタンフォードには数年前から物理研究ラボに出入りしている偽学生もいて、そちらはオカザキさんという日系アメリカ人。アジア系の学歴偏重の現れと言われてもしょうがない一面も。
ところで、たまたま先週このニュースが入った前の晩に見たのが2002年のB級作品「Orange County」（上）で、これがキムさんと同じオレンジ・カウンティの男の子が主人公の映画だった。海岸で読んだ本に感動して、その作家が教鞭をとる憧れのスタンフォード目指して猛勉強するんだけど楽勝のはずが高校の手違いで落ちこぼれの子の成績表と摩り替わって落ちる。諦め切れずに大学に乗り込んで教官を説得するハチャメチャ劇で、最後の 台詞は「スタンフォードなんて○○くらえ！」
キムさんのFacebookのプロフィ（削除済み）には好きな映画にCatch Me If You Can、Mission Impossibleなど、好きな言葉にはカート・ヴォネガットの「You are what you pretend to be」とあった。
