An engineer at mixi, Japan's biggest social network, conducted his own version of small world experiment by checking how many steps it takes from his own mixi account to each member choosing the shortest possible route via friends list.
As you can see below, Six Degrees of Separation actually cover an eye-hopping 88% of all users , and seven degrees can connect 98% of mixi's approx. 13 million registered members (as of Jan 2008).

From the results, he realized the reachable members stop increasing after 161 degrees at 98.5971%, which he assumed might have been caused by non-active members.
So, for the second experiment, he excluded those 1.4% non-active members from the list. Also, each member has different numbers of friends, and he is by no means an average joe. To take the median stats, he randomly sampled out 1,000 members and conducted the same experiment as he did with his own account. The following chart shows the average figure.

As you see, the Six Degrees of Separation can actually connect 88% of all mixi users, while 98% of them are just seven steps away with each other. The average separation turned out to be 5.4 degrees. So if you are an average mixi user, you can reach its 98% of users clicking your friend's friend's friend's 6 times. 5.4 is quite close to Marconi's magic number (5.83).
Well, next time you see someone saying "Milgram's Six Degree of Separation is just an urban legend," you may want to add, "Last time I checked, the small world experiment seemed to work in Japan's biggest SNS."
ミルグラムの手紙は95%届かなかった
「6次の隔たり」で傍証に使われるスタンレー・ミルグラムの「小さな世界」実験。
あれ実際には95%の手紙は届いてなくて、届いた手紙が平均5.5次だった話だけ一人歩きしてるんだよ…という話が 池田信夫 blogにあった。実験の失敗は知ってたけど、リンク先のBBC2006年7月13日付けの記事を見たら、ほんとだ、95％とある。へー。
この数字をエール大アーカイブでミルグラムの元々の実験報告探して見つけたのはアラスカ・フェアバンク大Judith Kleinfeld心理学教授だ。女史のサイトに詳細記事が並んでる。「MITの職場は女性差別」という調査結果を論破したり、なにやら学会のミス・バスターズみたいな立ち位置の人らしく、最近は専らミルグラム叩きで忙しくしてる。周りが勝手に作り上げた伝説に責任問われるんじゃ、ミルグラムもいい迷惑だろうけど、人生いろいろだわね。
ミクシィは6次のスモールワールド

ミ クシィの開発エンジニア氏が自分のアカウントからマイミク辿って、友だちの友だちを何段階踏めば全mixi会員（1月現在会員約1300万人）に到達する か調べた集計結果である。1回目の実験結果（表上）は自分のアカウントだけで試して、2回目は1回目の161次から先の幽霊会員1.4%を除き、任意抽出 1000人の最短コース平均を割り出した（表下）。1000人平均の結果は
「平均5.4次の隔たりで全体の98％に到達する」おおー、案外ミルグラムの5.5に近いじゃないか！ まあ、これ調子に乗って世界全体に拡大解釈すると都市伝説とか希望的観測になっちゃうけど、人種・言語・階層が似通ってて交流が盛んなクローズドな世界ではこんくらい行けるってことで。
マジックナンバー言いだしっぺはマルコーニ
ところで、「6」のマジックナンバー。あれ最初に唱えたのはマルコーニである。「地球全体を最短で結ぶには無線中継塔は何個必要か」というコスト演算で、このイタリアの発明家の頭に下ったご神託が「5.83」という数字だった。Wikipediaには「1909年ノーベル賞受賞のスピーチで明らかにした」とある（「要参考資料」とあるから別の機会かも…）。人と電波って全然違う話なのに。面白い。
