In response to US's plan to deploy its first laser weapon aboard USS Ponce, the PLA Navy Rear Admiral discussed about its weakness on China's national television. It came out when the whole nation was suffering from the prolonged air pollution as harsh as nuclear winter, prompting over 10,000 angry comments on Weibo.
アメリカがレーザー砲搭載USSポンセを中東に配備するという報道を受け、張召忠中国海軍少将（中国国防大学軍事専門家）が中国国営中央テレビに出演、
「空中の金属粒子でレーザーは弾かれる。PM（粒子の直径マイクロメートル）値が高ければ高いほどレーザーは貫通しづらくなる」
などとスモッグの戦略的有用性を滔々と語り、国民から
「なんのブラックジョークだ」
「スモッグが晴れたらと思うと怖くて夜もおちおち眠れない」
「そうか、国防だったのか」
と微博に1万件もの怒りと笑いのコメントがついた。
上がその問題発言。その後には「あんなもの海上配備しても潮の塩害ですぐ錆びる」とも発言しており、なにしろポンセのレーザーのことしか頭になかったことがわかる。本人も「なにもスモッグを擁護してるわけではない」と釈明してるようだけど、なんせ北京は24日からオレンジ色の警戒レベルの最中…間が悪かった。
