ボストン爆破だけテロと呼ぶ違和感：Why is Boston 'terrorism' but not Aurora, Sandy Hook, Tucson and Columbine? @guardian

Over the last two years, the US has witnessed at least three other episodes of mass, indiscriminate violence that killed more people than the Boston bombings did: the Tucson shooting by Jared Loughner in which 19 people (including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords) were shot, six of whom died; the Aurora movie theater shooting by James Holmes in which 70 people were shot, 12 of whom died; and the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting by Adam Lanza in which 26 people (20 of whom were children) were shot and killed. The word "terrorism" was almost never used to describe that indiscriminate slaughter of innocent people, and none of the perpetrators of those attacks was charged with terrorism-related crimes. A decade earlier, two high school seniors in Colorado, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, used guns and bombs to murder 12 students and a teacher, and almost nobody called that "terrorism" either.

In the Boston case, however, exactly the opposite dynamic prevails. Particularly since the identity of the suspects was revealed, the word "terrorism" is being used by virtually everyone to describe what happened. After initially (and commendably) refraining from using the word, President Obama has since said that "we will investigate any associations that these terrorists may have had" and then said that "on Monday an act of terror wounded dozens and killed three people at the Boston Marathon". But as Abunimah notes, there is zero evidence that either of the two suspects had any connection to or involvement with any designated terrorist organization.- The Guardian

この20年、アメリカではボストン爆破より多数の死者を伴う無差別大量殺人事件が少なくとも3回起こっている。ツーサン銃乱射事件ではジャレッド・ラフナーにガブリエル・ギフォーズ上院議員含め19名が撃たれて、うち6名が死亡した。オーロラ映画館乱射事件ではジェイムズ・ホームズに70名が撃たれて、うち12名が死亡した。 サンディフック小学校銃乱射事件ではジェイムズ・ランザに26名（うち20名は子ども）が撃たれて死亡した。どれも罪のない一般市民に対する無差別殺人だが「テロリズム」という言葉はほぼただの1度も使われた試しがない。テロ関連犯罪で告訴された犯人もいない。それに遡ること10年前にはコロラドの高校で最上級生のエリック・ハリスとディラン・クレボルドのふたりが爆弾・銃で教師と生徒12名を殺害したが、あれもほとんど誰も「テロリズム」とは呼ばない。

ところがボストンの事件ではまるで正反対の方向に力学が働いた。特に容疑者の身元が割れてからは、文字通り万人が「テロリズム」という言葉で事件を語った。最初のうちこそ（立派に）その言葉の使用を控えていたオバマ大統領も、その後は「ふたりのテロリストの交友関係を徹底的に洗い出す方針だ」、「月曜、ボストン・マラソンを襲ったテロ行為で大勢の人がけがをし3名の方が命を落とした」と言っている。しかし、アブニマー氏の言う通りで、今回の容疑者2人をテロ組織と結びつける証拠、テロ組織の関与を裏付ける証拠は何ひとつあがっていないのだ。　- The Guardian

Well-said.  I've been wondering the same thing since the very beginning and have refrained from using the term.  If younger brother says they did it alone, so be it.  He says he did it for religious reason.  Why religion?  Part of its answer is self-evident here.

これは最初から私もすごく不思議に思っていた。

なんの証拠もあがらないうちからテロテロ連呼する政府、それをそのまま伝えるマスコミ。犯人の片方が捕まって単独犯行の線が濃厚になると「罪のない一般市民を大勢巻き添えにする行為はおしなべてテロだ」とか言っちゃってさ…なんかヘンじゃない？　世の中には「無差別大量殺人」という便利な言葉があるのに。

捕まった弟の証言によると、犯行は兄弟が単独で行ったものであり、動機は「宗教」らしい。では宗教に向かわせたものは何だったのかってことになると、この世の中のこういうところにあるんじゃないのって気がしてしまうよ。
