英語は生まれ順が分からない：Birth Order not mentioned in English

When I translate 'twin sister' or 'brother' into Japanese, I always find it extremely difficult to find the right word. In Japan, they always state who's elder and who's younger, and there's no neutral expression such as 'siblings.' Even twin sisters and brothers have birth order and tell to the world who came out first. (Some argue that the one who came out later is in fact the first to be conceived.)

英語では「brother」とか「sister」とか「twin」とは言うけど、年上か年下かはっきり書かない。書かないのか、それとも書けないのか、それは分からない。書類も「siblings（兄弟姉妹）は何人？」とかって具合で生まれ順はおろか性別すら明記しなくて良い場合が多い。

なわけで、「John's brother, Mike」は「ジョンの兄弟マイク」、「Twin sister, Emily」は「双子の姉妹エミリー」になってしまう。「おいおい、“兄弟”って一人二役かいな」思いながら書くわけだ。

「married with two children」は「既婚2子」。「○○夫人と一男一女」とか格好よくは収まらない（英訳は英訳で長くなって困る）。

Twins - 日中ねじれ？

When I shared my thoughts with TechCrunch Japan's nob yesterday, he told me that the imported version of the 1988 film "Twins" has a clear distinction bet'n big brother and little brother in its Japanese subtitle, although the original provides no clue that may suggest Schwarzenegger to be a little brother.

And on top of that, its Hong Kong version's title is '龍兄鼠弟' meaning "Dragon-like big brother and Mouse-like little brother." Maybe, they thought Schwarzenegger (Dragon) is a big brother, and Danny DeVito (Mouse), a little brother.

In China, it goes like "龙兄鼠弟/龙鼠兄弟/孪生兄弟." Again, except for the last one meaning "Twin Brothers," they also identify the little brother with mouse. Exactly the opposite of what Japanese guessed.


「あれ、困りますよねー」と昨日TCの仲間nobさんに話したら、面白いこと教えてくれた。

1988年映画『Twins』は、原作にはどっちが兄か分かる表現は（nobさんが観た限り）ない。どう訳するものやら楽しみにしてたら日本版ではシュワちゃんが弟という設定になってたそうだ。ところが面白いことに香港行くとタイトル『龍兄鼠弟』でシュワちゃんがお兄ちゃんなのだ（詳しくは復氷ブログ「brotherは兄か弟か」でどうぞ）。

調べてみたら中国本土も『龙兄鼠弟/龙鼠兄弟/孪生兄弟』で、「孪世（Twins）兄弟」は中立だけどやっぱ弟がネズ公である。これ絶対ダニー・デビート（右）のことだよね？　体格で決め付けるのは早計かもしんないので中国語で観た方に是非聞いてみたいところだけど、nobさんの推測どおりならアジア各国都合よく解釈していて、それがまた捻れてる話になる。

Taboo?-双子の上下は「聞くだけ野暮」

I asked my 12-yr-old son if he has twin brothers or sisters at school. "Yes," he said. "Do you know who's elder?" "No, they're twins." "But you know, they know who came out first, right?"

A little embarrassed, he (who has just gone through the second round of Life Education) put an end to it, saying "Yeah, they make that joke bet'n them. But, it's just a joke."

Well, I moved on to my 7-yr-old daughter who watches The Suite Life of Zack and Cody day and night. "You know Zack and Cody?, right? Do you know who's older?" "Mom, they're twins. They're same. Zack is taller, though."(Actually Zack is ten minutes older than Cody.) "How about Twitches? Who's elder?" "They're twins, mom..."

念のため、12歳の息子に聞いてみた。

「学校に双子いる？」「いるよ」「どっちがお兄ちゃんか分かる？」「分かるわけないじゃん」「でも先に出てきたのがどっちかは知ってるんでしょ？」「ああ…それは2人の間で冗談じゃ言うけど…そんなの冗談だよ」で、そそくさと会話は打ち切りに。それ以上は踏み込んでいきにくい雰囲気だ（こないだライフ・エジュケーション終わったばかりだしなあ）。

7歳の娘に『Twitches』のお姉さんがどっちか聞いてみたら、「双子だから同じ」。朝から晩まで観てる『Zack and Cody』も「双子だよ。Zackの方が背高いけど」。でも、これはZackが実は10分早くて一度うっかり「弟が…」と口走って叫んで消えるシーンがあったようだ（Wikipedia）。

いずれにせよ双子の生まれ順は家族の秘密という感じかな。聞く方も詮索好き（もしくは変態）に思われないよう気をつけなくっちゃね。

Birth Order Matters - 気にはなる

It doesn't necessarily mean that American people care less about the impact of birth order. Last summer, for example, a Norwegian study revealed that firstborns' IQs (103 average) tend to be higher than those of their younger siblings (2nd=101, 3rd=100). It's been a focus of an endless debates and each one has his/her own theory. Maybe that's why they don't talk about it unless otherwise required.

英語圏でも生まれ順の影響には諸説あり決して無関心てわけじゃない。去年夏ノルウェーの科学者が徴兵24万1000人を対象に行った調査では「第1子のIQ平均は103、第2子は101、第3子は100」で長子ほど頭がいいという結果が出て騒がれた。「これは一流大学とその次ぐらいの差」と言う専門家もいて穏やかじゃない。ま、影響がゼロってことはないだろう。けど人によって解釈が違うことなので、後天的影響を排除するためにもその辺はぼかしているのかも。
